Those with misconceptions think all TEDx events are run by TED employees (or expect them to all be the exact same thing). This means applying to one doesn’t harm (or help) your chances at any other event, and applying on the official website will not allow you to be considered for any TEDx event, meaning you won’t have a good time trying to land a TEDx talk. Furthermore, each of those events will have different videography teams and the quality of the production varies drastically.

Last, but not least, you need to keep in mind that many speakers work hard on getting feedback on their entire talk and making sure it’s amazing. TEDx events can get hundreds of submissions, so the administration is not always able to review everyone’s entire talk (and most speakers don’t even send over their talk).

How Do You Land A TEDx Talk, Then?

Instead, the event organizers will often make a decision whether to move on with a speaker based on a brief concept, so it makes sense to test and refine this so you have a rejection-proof pitch. Long story short, create a brief concept of what you want to talk about and shorten your biography section. The competition is your toughest obstacle.

  • Background: A blank background (i.e. against a plain white wall) is recommended, or choose somewhere that relates to your class. For example, if you are offering fitness advice why not ask permission to film inside your local gym?
  • Clothing: Avoid wearing anything with patterns such as close stripes, checks, tweeds or herringbone, all of which tend to distort on camera. Solid coloured clothes in shades such as navy, grey, cream and brown are safer options which will look better on screen.
  • Practice makes perfect: Last but not least, make sure you practice what you are going to say before filming. Rehearsing in front of a mirror or with test recordings will help you control your speed, body language and facial expressions. If necessary, write a rough script and use this as a basis. However, be careful not to learn it to heart and end up reciting it word for word. You want to sound warm and natural.
