Online Course Description

This course introduces students to political philosophy by studying the writings of some of its greatest contributors: Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Kant. Topics we will explore include the ancient city-state, the modern nation-state, constitutional government, democracy, freedom, rights, justice, power, the public sphere, and the nature of political action and judgment. Emphasis will be placed on the normative principles that motivate preferences for various political regimes, especially the concepts of personhood and agency. We'll also use what we learn from these thinkers to anallyze the three most important political tendencies of the modern world: nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and populism.
